Google has made a derivative of linux and made a another mobile os , but how its different from say other linux based mobile distro like nokia mameo …..difference is

Google implemented own Windowing system rather using existing X windows system on linux , which means standard linux apps wont run on it

Google made a their own language called Dalvik with syntax like j2me rather than extending j2me , which means standard j2me app cannot run on it without modification

this rather unfortunate as Android wont be able to leverage hundreds of thousands of exiting linux apps and j2me apps , fragmented linux , same it story with chrome os. I really dont know why google has wasted so much time (and others too like Motorola specially) on this toy rather than using existing toolset and they have successfully managed to further fragmented entire mobile market with yet another mobile OS and language. I guess they just made this project to get control and confuse market (more control == embedding google services and application directly into mobile , which means more clicks nd eyeball for advt)

I think nokia maemo is better solution , its based on debian core (oldest and most stable linux distro ) and match box window manager , which all Linux apps will work on it , in this age of powerful mobile cpu (already 1 gz in snapdragon ) and ram it does matter !!

Here is what my take on Android and chome os

ITS TOY , Can’t run standard linux apps and chrome os just a glorified web browser

JUNK IT , specially guys like motorola use a real OS like maemo , make your own linux derivative

All those hw vendor stop wasting your time on andriod , use maemo and drivers from andriod

NOKIA pl be serious about maemo , stop wasting your r&d $ on old rag like symbian , use on creating great UI and user experience and replace maemo on all top and mid range phone , you guys just dont have time waste other wise apple and RIM will bite your ass

Lots of my younger cousins , friends younger brothers and sisters ask for my advice on how get a job .

based on experince here some Generic Advice

Find out what you love , what really excites you and SPECIALIZE in it .Fist job should not be about money but getting relevant experience. DONOT accept a job which does not match your skillset , your time is precious

Career graph should tell same story , working multiple un related is not going get you anywhere , so focus one skill set.

College / Book education is usually useless in real world , its practical experience that counts , Best way to get it is do open source projects (you get free help/advice and feedack) or work volunteer in some work or do you own project . This would look great in your resume and allow you answer practical interview questions also allow you interact with industry/Community , you might get a job by reference

Interact with community and industry , go to events , join Internet forums , chat with them on IRC, if possible get industry certifications

There lot intern /fresher job sites search in Google , just post your requirement there

Best of Luck !!

Mod deflate is module shipped with apache2 the most used web server in world , I wanted to use reduce my ajax app size (lots of js ) , i used a excellent frame work from Google called Gwt …..which is already optimized …..but wanted to reduce further …so used compression ….I will quickly tell how to enable and use it …..i am using ubuntu server …i guess it would be same debian …rpm /fedora redhat folks just modify

Activate mod_deflate module in apache : sudo a2enmod deflate

Add mod_defale configuration : you wont compress all ready compressed files jpg , pdf and waste your server precious CPU cycle , so you can tell apache which mime types to explicitly compress and also compression level (0 min , 9 max) , some prehistoric browsers also dont handle compression well so need to take account of that : sudo vim /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/deflate.conf

Configure deflate.conf : <IfModule mod_deflate.c>
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml application/xml application/xhtml+xml  text/css text/javascript application/x-javascript
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4.0[678] no-gzip
BrowserMatch bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html
DeflateCompressionLevel 9
SetEnvIf User-Agent “.*MSIE.*” nokeepalive ssl-unclean-shutdown downgrade-1.0 force-response-1.0
</IfModule>

Restart to take effect : /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Here you go …now your web server will serving content around 30 to 70% smaller original content

For those who have never heard about GWT …let me tell you briefly about it …its stands for Google Web Toolkit ………its framework for lazy java dev who can program in comforts of their favourite java IDE like eclipse and favourite language which is java and producing amazing ajax based web apps ……….i dont want to waste your time about telling GWT you are better off learning about more about from the source http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/…………………Only thing which I found missing GWT was number of widgets ………..SmartGwt (based on smartclient javascript library) has more more 100 widgets !! Read about it here …. http://code.google.com/p/smartgwt/

Now you know about what smartgwt and Gwt is all about ………lets configure smartgwt/gwt on eclipse and make a sample app

Download SmartGwt ->http://code.google.com/p/smartgwt/downloads/list

Download latest Gwt -> http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/download.html

Download Cypal studio -> http://code.google.com/p/cypal-studio/downloads/list

Extract all above

Install Cypal studio in eclipse -> Unzip Cypal.X.zip in eclipse folder

Configure Cypal studio -> Eclipse -> Window Preferences -> Cypal Studio -> GWT Option -> Put that path to dowloaded gwt

Create a Gwt project :- Create a new Dynamic Webproject in eclipse and choose configuration as cypal studio

Add SmartGwt.jar to to project class path others as seen in the screen shot below in the order otherwise you will get errors

Create GWt Module -> Right Click on Project ->New -> Other -> Cypal Studio ->Gwt Module

Edit Module Xml Configuration -> Cypal Studio automatically creates module xml file which is of same name as Class Name -> locate it (in this example its TestSmartGwt.gwt.xml) and add following line to add smartgwt support to module -> <inherits name=”com.smartgwt.SmartGwt”/>

Edit Entry point and Add code -> Cypal studio will create EntryPoint class with same name and location as mentioned in step 9

package com.pagux.gwt.tutorial.client;

import java.util.LinkedHashMap;

import com.google.gwt.core.client.EntryPoint;

import com.smartgwt.client.widgets.Canvas;
import com.smartgwt.client.widgets.form.fields.events.ClickHandler;
import com.smartgwt.client.widgets.form.fields.events.ClickEvent;
import com.smartgwt.client.util.SC;

public class TestSmartGwt implements EntryPoint {
public void onModuleLoad() {
DynamicForm form = new DynamicForm();

TextItem textItem = new TextItem();
textItem.setTitle(”Hello World “);

LinkItem linkItem = new LinkItem(”link”);
linkItem.setTitle(”LinkItem”);
linkItem.setLinkTitle(”Click Me”);
linkItem.addClickHandler(new ClickHandler() {
public void onClick(ClickEvent event) {
SC.say(”Hello World”);
}
});
TextAreaItem textAreaItem = new TextAreaItem();
textAreaItem.setTitle(”TextArea”);
ColorPickerItem colorPicker = new ColorPickerItem();
colorPicker.setTitle(”Color Picker”);
colorPicker.setWidth(85);
DateItem dateItem = new DateItem();
dateItem.setTitle(”Date”);
dateItem.setHint(”<nobr>Picklist based date input</nobr>”);

form.setFields(textItem, linkItem, colorPicker, textAreaItem, dateItem );
form.draw();

}

}
12. Run Project -> Right Click on Project -> Run AS -> Gwt Appliocation

I hope this will help you get started with smartgwt ……………please let me know if have anything to add-on

Unfortunately SmartGwt is quite bloated , application above produced application that involved 2 mb of download , upon optimization (manually including js files / GZIP compression) it came down 800 kb which is still not acceptable if got high traffic website or sensitive about application size …main reason for this is bloated CORE SmartClient Js Lib which is around 500kb and 230 kb uncompressed and is included in all applications …….so if your application is for corporate lan use smartgwt otherwise use GWT widgets…though GWT widgets have less due amazing amount of optimization done by GWT compiler..its even less than hand wirtten code most of the times ………I tried to raise this point in smartgwt forum but I dont think they are going to do anything about it -> http://forums.smartclient.com/showthread.php?t=4690&highlight=bloated

With Nokia licensing QT with more business friendly LGPL (same as GTK) is it beginning of end of Gnome ? To say the truth I never liked Gnome its like underpowered ugly duckling whose Corporate backed Gnome Foundation (Due LGPL GTK license ) said with pride less features is actually a Good thing and users are too stupid to have more than one way of doing things !!! stupidity of gnome is exemplary for example no support of tabbed windows , one separate app for configuring each option (haven’t they heard about control panel ) ………its cheap effort to copy mac which so ugly that if Steve Jobs used he would prefer to be blind !!..Gnome is also issue of freezing up ……We were using Ubuntu (Gnome ) in office but it used freeze so often that initially we thought Graphic card driver was wrong , but problem was happening on 3 different machines and another machines with kubuntu (kde) were running fine so we suspected something else and we all switched to kde and the issue is history . Looks like ubuntu mobility project is thinking on moving to QT from GTK

I have been long time user of Kde but only time i was disappointed with KDE when they release KDE 4.0 which was utter failure but with KDE 4.2 they are back in game …….I hope KDE 4.X series soon stabilizes as legendary kde 3.5 series .

Gnome folks I suggest either you give up or alteast don’t make Gnome as Ugly as its is now

cation : Highly baised post!!

I am now kde 3.5x branch , which stable , fast and functional and doest hangs like GNOME . I will be sticking up with kde 3.5 as much time it requires for 4.X branch to settle down

Btw I just want to ask GNome folks Why Nautilus doesnt have TAB support !!Its so god damn irritating

Already excellent library is now now GPL v 3 which is good as well as bad , generally dual license is used by many companies like mysql where you can get a commercial license by paying $$, when this was announced lot of php dev threatened to stop using mysql and go for technically better but not so famous databases like Postgresql , firebird etc , so mysql included to special clause for php dev so that dev can use it in commercial application . This seems to be nice strategy earn money first wait your framework to be widely adopted and then introduce dual license and you hit major jackpot !!

I am listing few great ajax framework in BSD and LGPL

1) Dojo Framework

2) Tibco GI

Apply is most closed company on earth , they believe dominance thru monopoly and they seem to be more closed even M$ .

All their product are closed , user have no control or choice . Steve Job philosophy my way or highway

Look at thier products

iPod : User cannot change battery ,what if my iPod battery dies ?
Apple solution : Get a new iPod !! if you are warranty send it us we will change it

iTunes : Only thing works with is itunes client installed , How I am supposed to buy stuff if I use linux desktop

iPhone : Locked to particular network (AT&T) , users have to buy 3rd party software to unlock it

Mac : Minimal games , softwares you can work without boot camp

MacOsX : Only comes with mac hardware

Apple is company with specializes creating hype and creating eye candy stuff , their business model is based creating vendor lock in and monopoly

No wonder there is 2 billion $ class action law suite coming up against them

Technically Medicores company with good designer with rock star marketing guy Steve jobs , we refuse to take this shit from your overpriced products and monopolistic tactics .We want more freedom and value if ever want to increase your market share more that 1%

Until then I guess solution for me is to use KickBista Linux (based on kubuntu) and dual boot to windows when I want play games

I SAY NO APPLE AND WILL NEVER BUY APPLE PRODUCT TILL THEY SHUN MONOPOLISTIC TACTICS , what about you ?
