It was really great day for Linux as one of biggest PC vendor (or should I say struggling) Dell launched its own linux based Desktop and Laptop series based on Ubuntu Linux ….we at pagux just love Kubuntu (KDE based brother of ubuntu) and Ubuntu , my laptop I writing this blog runs on kubuntu and servers on virtualized Ubuntu nodes running on zen . What so great about Ubuntu and why it so popular …. and beating popularity contest of other Star Distro like Redhat (yuck!!) and Debian and Suse (M$ pals).
I remember I used to use RedHat when it was free (RH 9) and Fedora . Its one of most 3rd grade distribution ever , RPM is issues can cause you nightmares ….there UI for system administration are substandard python scripts system-config-xx . Fedora is absolute lab rat for future RHEL distributions, with upgrade cycle of six moths ….who on earth will want run servers on fedora (which redhat themselves say that its not suited production system ) … I actually few years back i wanted to run Orcale 9i on fedora I was told Redhat employee in fedora mailing list that you can run Oracle on fedora system as its not supported …..so i took it as challenge not only manage to run Oracle but even wrote a how on it on Linux Documentation Project.Redhat may think they have found an excellent scheme to mint money ……..use the community sweat to develop the core system and repackage , polish and sell it two corporates cash cows and what community get in return ….A unstable moving target Distro which cannot and should not use in server and probably not your desktop (do you want to format and upgrade after six moths !!). Yeah offocorse RH folks will say there is yum but i cant simply match maturity and of Debian’s apt, Never try to upgrade your system through it
Debian is exactly opposite, with release cycle of almost three years (it has no fixed release cycle) , its excellent for server on litle older hardware why because can you expect 3 year old linux Kernel to support latest RAID or NIC Driver !!On desktop nobody uses Debian Stable , why because Do you really want your OpenOffice.org or firefox to 3 years old …that would be ancient !! Ofcourse there is testing branch and Debian Unstable …..its really cutting edge but again its moving target …if a package doesn’t work in testing and you complain in mailing list…they will rebuff why are you using unstable anyway .But debian developers do the core and they do it right and maintain most of 17,000 packages which form base of other Debian based Distro like Lisprise , Ubuntu , Xandros
And Suse …… why dont you get free coupons from M$

In short Redhat and $USE are double standard distro ,Drive innovation thru pathetic bloated lab rat community ditro and Pay thru your nose for those silly subscription … and check their pricing its same as M$ Vista , with same Vendor lockin as M$ (subscriptions ) you better pick M$ rather than RHEL or $use specially if you are SMB customer or large Enterprise customer who can get lot of discounts
Why Ubuntu is popular and better because
- Predicable release and support cycle (18 months to 5 years ) absolulty free !!
- Just works on hardware and intuitive lot of Ubuntu specif codding
- Great for New bee (Just works ) and expert (debian based , longer predictable support cycle)
- Want support get it cannocial and its partners world wide
- heck you can order a free Cd too !!
- Want to play proprietry media format just run automatix
- Helpful community
- You pay only for support NOT THE OS !!
- No Double Standards , everything is free no strings attached…. No entripse version (premium version) and lame duck communiity version
We at pagux are also taking Ubuntu to next level , why not make Ubuntu better that Vista (both feature , UI and Usability wise) and add some cool enterprise features like integrated document management, Openoffice p2p collabration plugin ,Encrypted hardisk , biometrics and stateless client, VIOP , Team managment . We want all the features in Vista and OS x in our Distro and we are fast finishing all the list.

One other things we are doing is meta pack , are you voice artist and need recording ,mixing tools ..download Voice talent pack , similarly folks intrested DTP will download DTP meta pack etc in short you would be able to set your system and applications pretty quickly. Plus tested and certified for leading hardware vendors !!
